Foxconn plant reopens, resumes operations following explosion

Foxconn confirmed today that its manufacturing plant in Chengdu, China has reopened and resumed operations following an explosion in its iPad 2 production facility last month that killed three employees and left others in hospital. The company has also announced that while its investigation into the incident is "ongoing," it has already addressed the preliminary finding that the explosion was "likely due to an explosion of aluminum dust in a ventilation duct." To that end, it says it has put in place "improvements in workshop ventilation," as well as a "a total revamping of the policies and practices related to the disposal of that dust." Here's something to add to your long list of webOS-related rumors: OfficeMax may be getting the HP TouchPad this July. If the above document is to be believed, HP's new 9.7-inch tablet will be available at the retailer on July 17th in both 3G and 4G versions -- which is a bit puzzling, considering the company hasn't made any mention of WiMAX or LTE compatibility. As for that earlier Walmart gossip, another tipster provided PreCentral with a screenshot of the big box's database (after the break), which corroborates the $600 price tag we've been hearing about for the 32GB model. Lady Gaga Sells Latest Album Everywhere, And For Cheap

When Lady Gaga's Born This Way was released last Monday, online retailer Amazon made a move to boost its sales of the album by offering the whole thing in MP3 form for only 99 cents. So many people bought the album that Amazon's servers had trouble fulfilling all orders. To make it right, Amazon offered the sale price again, on Thursday.

Ann Powers spoke to Morning Edition host Renee Montagne about the implications of selling an album for a sliver of the price people are used to paying.

Ann says it's important to remember that Lady Gaga "fires on all cylinders." "The physical product of an album is merely one aspect of her overall campaign to dominate popular culture," she says. "Call it a big part of her marketing plan, but not necessarily the absolute center of her art."

Though charging a tiny fraction of what albums usually cost might appear to be a fan-friendly move that would dovetail nicely with Gaga's image as a woman of the people, she didn't have any control over Amazon's price. Ann says Gaga's fans would pay anything to get her latest album ? the 99 cent price is more likely to pique the interest of casual listeners.

Gaga's retail plan for this album involved thousands of different retailers, according to her manager. She debuted songs on the online game Farmville, for example, and people buying a cell phone from Best Buy last week got a copy of Born This Way with their purchase.

None of Gaga's moves last week are unprecedented. "She never invents the wheel," Powers says. "She just spins the wheels in ways that nobody quite thought of before." Powers and many other analysts predict Lady Gaga's first-week sales will crack a million. The numbers will be released on Wednesday.

Like a stunning, stylized nightmare, Mike Hill's first ground-rattling growl on Path of Totality is "CHAOS REIGNS." It's enough to conjure that memorable scene from Lars Von Trier's controversial film, Antichrist, in which a self-disemboweling fox cryptically and prophetically utters these two words to Willem Defoe's character. If anything, it sets the tone for a dark, fully absorbing listen on Tombs' second album.

With Path of Totality, out June 7, the Brooklyn metal trio takes its disparate influences and distills an expansive palette using thick, controlled brushstrokes. The industrial sledgehammer of Godflesh meets the blast-beated darkness of early Darkthrone in "To Cross the Land," while "Vermillion" intones a sinister psychedelic swirl over an impressive rhythm section preparing for war. The atmospheric Goth-rock of The Cure presides over "Passageways" and "Black Heaven," as the dead-eyed stare of Swans ? the members of Tombs are admittedly huge fans ? lurks in unlit corridors. But while the band's wide-ranging music libraries are on display, Path of Totality functions as something new, mostly because its extremity is tempered by a dynamic push and pull, accentuated by the spacious production of John Congleton, whose diverse clientele includes Explosions in the Sky, Baroness, Modest Mouse and St. Vincent.

"To push extremity, I feel like you should also have more dynamics in the overall experience of the record," guitarist and vocalist Mike Hill said in a recent interview. "To be extreme, in my opinion, you should have the really aggressive material and then temper that with material that's not as aggressive to bookmark the aggression."

Case in point: After the meditative and surprisingly melodic "Silent World," Tombs unleashes "Cold Dark Eyes," a barrage of clustered chords beating into the decay of a doomed world. Chaos? Consider it reigned.
