I was thrilled to meet Joy at my raw food luncheon I hosted at my fam?s home in Vermont this summer. Here she is enjoying nanner ice cream topped with my fam?s certified organic pure maple syrup. Although syrup is not raw, it?s widely accepted and used in the raw food community. It?s always been my #1 fave natural sweetener.
Q&A By Celeste Beebe-Resch
So many people want to get healthy but they are very confused about where to start. Suggest 5 steps people can take today to dive in.
Take a close look at yourself in the mirror and make an assessment.? Do you like the way you FEEL?? The way you look? And if the answer is NO then make a commitment to yourself to make healthy changes in your lifestyle to turn that answer into a YES.? We all deserve ?self-care? and yet many of us, especially women, have been accustomed to putting ourselves on the back burner and taking care of everyone else first.? Much like the oxygen mask on an airplane?.taking care of yourself FIRST will give you the energy and outlook to be able to assist others, if needed.
1????????????? Make the decision to change- write it down!
2????????????? Commit to the decision?whether it be food related or fitness.? Find something that resonates with YOU and what you like.? For example, I don?t like MEAT, so to attempt the Atkins diet would be ludicrous as I would not be able to stick with it!? Also I don?t like to run?.so I am not going to begin running.? Instead, I may choose to walk as my form of fitness.? Find something that makes your heart sing and commit to it.
3????????????? Keep a journal?chart your progress and accomplishments?especially if your goals relate to food intake and making dietary changes.? Most people do not know where they are starting out nutrition-wise or calorie-wise so how can they know how to proceed and make necessary changes?? Many people are starving themselves nutritionally?and exceeding their daily calorie needs?and yet there are also many people who are not eating ENOUGH calories?.thus their metabolism slows down.? One of the best things I think people can begin to do is to begin incorporating more whole foods and RAW foods in their diet.? Your energy will soar and you?ll begin to radiate from within.
4????????????? Surround yourself with others with similar goals and interests.? Find someone who inspires you and ask for them to share what is working for them.
5????????????? Drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water per day.? It will help keep you hydrated, help with brain function, digestion and keep you feeling full and satisfied.
How do you suggest people connect with like-minded health conscious individuals so they don?t feel so alone on their healing journey.
I think associating with like-minded people through ?meet up?,? like minded friends etc. will help you stay inspired and on track.? There are so many online resources available through the internet and social net-works?most are free so I would suggest people joining these groups to stay connected.
Health is a habit, not an event.? Begin making ?healthy deposits? in your life on a daily basis and you?ll enjoy more vibrant health.? Who knows you may even inspire others to as well?
How do you incorporate daily exercise and activity into your busy life?
FITNESS IS a part of my life?just like eating good healthy food.? Because it is a priority I make the time!? Once I changed my attitude years ago from ?I HAVE to work out? to ?I DESERVE to work out? it became a natural part of what I do 6 days a week.? I like the way it makes me feel and it keeps my 54 year old metabolism healthy and efficient.
What are the steps you took to transform your health and lifestyle?
I was first introduced to RAW or ?Living Foods? when I went to Hippocrates Health Institute in Florida back in late 1999 and participated in their ?three week long Life Change Program?.? Prior to that time I thought RAW meant eating celery and carrot sticks and salads.? I didn?t understand the LIFE FORCE in foods that are uncooked or unprocessed. That experienced changed my life!? I have altered my food intake over the years to accommodate just about any foods but inevitably gravitate back to the RAW FOOD program for optimal health and energy.? Personally I am happy with a balance of 75-80% raw?. However for a 2 month period I had a raw food chef living with me in Arizona and I was the healthiest and leanest I have been in years!
Do you eat high fat raw or LFRV??
I eat a ration of usually 20% protein, 60% carbs and 20% fats.? At the moment, I am doing a 14 day RAW so my protein is most likely less.? My fats mainly come from nuts, avocado, olive oil and a product called PULSE- which are all vegan.? I am not vegan but gravitate more to that than eating animal fats.? Occasionally I use butter and eat feta cheese.
Do you eat raw and/or cooked?
Both.? My typical diet is 70-80% raw although this past year- esp. when the weather is cold- I have eaten more cooked foods like veggies, quinoa and brown grains?.occasionally fish? when doing the P90X fitness program I followed their suggestions and in order to get the % of protein in phase 1 I ate more proteins from fish, some chicken.? Didn?t like the way it made me feel!
What do you eat and/exercise in a typical day?
I love natural, organic shakes (smoothies- adding frozen fruits)?lots of salads and raw veggies, fresh fruits, nuts.? Sometimes salmon for dinner or a veggie bean patty.
Exercise includes cardio and free weights.
Supplementation with a product called FrequenSea.? See ad attached that I used to run in the Hippocrates Health Magazine.? That is how I met Linda W.- through a friend who introduced her to FrequenSea.? HHI carries some of our marine phytoplankton products in their store.
For those interested in transitioning to a more raw diet, how does the 14-Day Raw Promise work?
The 14 Day Raw Promise supplies you with 14 days of Raw and Whole Foods to assist you in the transition to eating more RAW foods.? Many times people want to change their intake from cooked foods to more raw, but do not know where to begin.? We KNOW that anyone who gives this ?dietary change? a 14 day commitment, that they will love the results, thus the word ?promise?.? People inevitably lose weight, detoxify naturally, their digestion improves, their energy soars, skins glows and their cravings for unhealthy foods subside or disappear altogether.?? Many people find this is like a ?road-map? that offers healthy/raw and high fiber products as well as a menu guide line on eating foods.? I also support anyone who does the challenge through the process?..for free.? 14 short days to better health?.how easy is that? http://www.1882119.myforevergreen.org/therawpromise/RawPromiseProgram.html
Tell us a little about the ForeverGreen products and how they have helped you personally.
I have been consuming a product called FrequenSea since August of 2005.? FrequenSea is a tonic with marine phytoplankton that balances both your physical AND emotional body.? I believe it is one reason (along with a healthy lifestyle) that I am always extremely healthy- and have a very strong immune system.? I have also seen this product assist others who are very ill, regain their health in a short period of time.? Other products of ForeverGreen that have changed my life are their personal care products.? Because our skin is our largest organ I am careful to use only products that are all natural and without chemicals.? ForeverGreen has an entire line of products dedicated to personal care for both the body and hair but also in the home.? So many times people?s immune systems are compromised by what they put on their skin, as well as in their bodies.? I am also very passionate about their newest product line that is called Versativa?which is HEMP based.? Not only is hemp the most bioavailable protein available?but there are thousands of products that can be made from industrial hemp.? ForeverGreen is working hard to get laws passed to allow our farmers in the USA grow hemp- rather than having to import it from other countries.? By doing so hemp products will become more affordable but it will also sustain our economy AND help our farmers.
What would a day in the life of Joy look like? (what you ate, fitness, etc.)
The past 6 months I have been very disciplined with my schedule as I had some specific health and fitness goals.? My schedule has altered slightly but this is what a typical day looks like for me.
Up and out of bed by 6:30 AM.? Although I often like to sleep later, this past winter my naturopath made that suggestion to increase my energy.? According to the Ayurvedic theory waking/getting up AFTER 6:30 AM puts you in a Kapha state, which is a much slower moving state.? Once I changed this my energy did in fact, improve.
The first thing I consume is an ounce of FrequenSea and a latte??followed by a small bowl of oatmeal or piece of fresh fruit.? This would give me a little nourishment, but not too much, for our morning workout, which is usually at 8 AM. This past winter and spring Dave and I did P90X which is a wonderful DVD series from Beachbody that incorporates weight training and cardio.? Why?? To get in the best shape of our lives at 54 years old!
Immediately following our work out we would have a recovery drink or healthy snack to replenish our body the nutrients that were used for the intense workout. Because of the intensity of our workouts we found eating 5 smaller meals supplied us with necessary energy and also kept fueling the metabolism to be more efficient.
By 1 PM I am at Snap Fitness, where I work as manager.? Each day is different and working with our members to reach their health and fitness goals.
Since I can get interrupted at any given moment with walk ins, members or phone calls, my food consumption has to be something already prepared and easy to eat.? ForeverGreen has many raw whole food products such Pulse with hemp, bars, nutritional shakes, etc.? I also eat lots of fruit and salads.
Although I prefer and believe eating earlier in the evening is better for one?s health, I usually eat dinner around 7:30 or 8 PM, when I get home from work.? Often times it is a lighter meal due to my mid-day meal being more like a ?dinner? but sometimes it is a normal size meal.? I eat predominately a plant based diet which keeps me from feeling too sluggish- even if I eat at night.? I love wine so often I?ll include that at the end of the day.
More about Joy:
Currently Joy is a manager of a fitness center in Burlington VT, but ask anyone who knows Joy and they would say Joy is a Lifestyle, Health and Fitness Coach.? ?I believe there are 3 important components in our lives that are all important for a healthy & balanced life. (The body, mind and spirit) Perhaps it was my own journey that led me to find the passion to help others in these areas.? For example there was a time in my life where I was obsessed with my career?and what occurred?? My body became de-conditioned and I gained weight and had low energy.? I recall an intuitive friend tell me, back in 1999, that if I didn?t take time for myself and find a healthy balance in MY LIFE that the Universe would slow me down?and it may be through an illness or worse- in order to catch my attention.
Joy lives in Winooski, VT with her partner Dave and their two sister-cats, Luna and Soleil.? She has two children, Justin (30) and Kori (29) a granddaughter, Kamaria Joy (3.5) and another grandbaby on the way.
