Apple Sends Out Invites; Bad Piggies to Debut Sept. 27; Is Voicemail Dead?

Apple Sept 12 Invite

Apple was the talk of the tech world on Tuesday after sending out invites for a Sept. 12 press event, which is expected to include the launch of the next-gen iPhone.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 4S lost ground to Samsung's Galaxy S III last month, marking the first time that the Apple smartphone was not the top-selling smartphone in the U.S. since its launch, according to Tuesday data from Canaccord Genuity. The stats, however, aren't all that shocking, since most Apple fans are likely waiting for the iPhone 5. A recent survey revealed that 74 percent of iPhone 4 owners plan to purchase the next-gen iPhone.

In other news, a new report from USA Today and VoIP firm Vonage confirms what was already fairly obvious: Voicemail is dying. In preparing data for the paper, Vonage found that the number of voicemail messages left on user accounts decreased 8 percent in July compared to a year ago.

In gaming news, Angry Birds maker Rovio is at it again with a new mobile game called Bad Piggies, which is set to launch on Sept. 27. The game turns the original franchise upside down, letting fans play as the pigs.
