Moms, a local group of over 300 moms in Fairfield County, have organized a county-wide fire safety awareness and fundraising event called ?A Show of Support,? which is designed to provide solidarity for the Badger family and others who have suffered fire-related tragedies, according to organizers.
The event, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m., follows a Dec. 25 fire at 2267 Shippan Ave. in Stamford that killed 9-year-old Lily Badger and her 7-year-old-twin sisters Grace and Sarah, along with their maternal grandparents, Lomer and Pauline Johnson.
The informal, family-friendly, one hour event, which is open to the public and will take place simultaneously at participating fire stations between Stratford and Greenwich, gives area residents a chance to show, through attendance and improved fire safety education, their support for families like the Badgers and their local fire stations, according to organizers.
Participating fire stations ? which includes Stamford?s Belltown Fire Station at 8 Dorlen Road, among others ? will offer informative demonstrations, tips and open question-and-answer sessions for both children and adults, firehouse and truck tours, interactive instruction for use of safety and rescue equipment, and more. Some stations will have giveaways, offer light snacks, and a fire-themed craft project to occupy any children in attendance. A suggested donation of $20 per family will be divided among local participating firehouses, as well as The Other 364 Foundation, in honor of the Badger family. ?The members of CT-Moms felt this was a meaningful way for area families to show how deeply we have been moved by recent fire-related tragedies,? said Medha Thomas, founder of CT-Moms Online. ?By showing up at one of the participating fire stations, and refreshing our knowledge of fire safety and prevention strategies, we will allow our actions to speak in a way that words never could when it comes to reverence for those who have lost life and gratitude for those who save lives every day.?
As part of the event, Elahi Children in Westport will host a session specifically for families with children or adults in the household who have special needs.
?When it comes to fire safety in the home, families with special needs face a unique set of physical and emotional challenges,? Elahi founder Kami Evans said. ?In cooperation with volunteers from the Westport Fire Station, we will offer customized demonstrations, a question and answer session, and relaxation strategies to help make successfully navigating stressful situations easier for everyone in the family.?
Other participating fire stations include: Noroton Heights Fire Station, 209 Noroton Avenue, Darien; Bridgeport Fire Station, 30 Congress Street, Bridgeport; Trumbull Center Fire Department, 860 White Plains Road, Trumbull; Greenwich Fire Station, 75 Holly Hill Lane, Greenwich; Stratfield Fire Department, 400 Jackman Avenue, Fairfield; and the Westport Fire Station / Elahi Children Yoga special needs-focused session, Christ & Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane, Westport.
