Gold hovers around $1,620/oz, c.bank meetings eyed
SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Gold held steady above $1,620 per ounce on Monday, as investors wait for the central banks on both sides of the Atlantic to give clearer cues on the potential for further monetary stimulus.
Last Friday's data showed U.S. economic growth slowed in the second quarter as consumers spent at their slowest pace in a year, increasing pressure on the Federal Reserve to do more to bolster the recovery ahead of the Fed policy meeting later in the week.
Ambiguity on another round of quantitative easing, known as QE3, has held gold in a seesawing pattern over the past two months. More monetary easing would raise inflation outlook and benefit gold, seen as a hedge against rising prices.
But some analysts expect the Fed to stick to the line that the economy has not deteriorated sufficiently for the central bank to intervene.
"I don't see the Fed drastically changing its rhetoric on QE3 at this week's meeting," said Li Ning, an analyst at Shanghai CIFCO Futures. "Technically, gold is poised for some correction after last week's rally, as there is still quite a bit of pressure at the $1,640 level."
Spot gold had edged down 0.1 percent to $1,620.91 per ounce by 0248 GMT, after posting a 2.5 percent weekly gain on Friday, its biggest one-week rise in nearly two months. It hit $1,629.10 in the previous session, the highest since early June.
The U.S. gold futures contract for August delivery inched up 0.1 percent to $1,620.30.
Gold has drifted between $1,530 and $1,640 over the past two months.
Technical analysis suggested that spot gold was due to correct to $1,608 per ounce during the day, said Reuters market analyst Wang Tao.
The higher prices triggered some selling in the physical market in Asia, dealers said.
"We've seen scrap come out from Indonesia and Thailand as prices moved up," said a Singapore-based dealer, adding that the gold bar premium was steady around 80 cents per ounce above London prices.
Investors will also closely watch the policy meeting of the European Central Bank on Thursday, after the bank's chief Mario Draghi's pledge last week to do everything necessary to protect the euro zone fuelled expectations for more accommodative policy moves.
ETF HOLDINGS DECLINE
In contrast to the buoyant sentiment in the gold market in recent sessions, inventor interest in exchange-traded gold products was on the decline.
Holdings of SPDR, the world's biggest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, have been falling for a month and dropped to 1,248.606 tonnes on Friday, the lowest level since early November.
Hedge funds and money managers trimmed their net long positions in U.S. gold futures and options by about 25 percent in the week ended July 24, data from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission showed.

HSBC profits slide after scandals
Europe's biggest bank by assets, HSBC, posted on Monday a drop in half-year profits after taking a $2.0 billion-hit to cover costs from a US money-laundering scandal and mis-selling claims in Britain.
Net profit dropped 8.0 percent to $8.44 billion (6.88 billion euros) in the six months to June compared with the first half of 2011, the British lender said in a results statement.
The Asia-focused bank's pre-tax profit rose 11 percent to $12.7 billion, boosted by asset sales, particularly in the United States.
HSBC shares closed up 0.79 percent to 535.30 pence on London's benchmark FTSE 100 index, which ended with a gain of 1.18 percent at 5,693.63 points.
"Regulatory and compliance events in the first six months of the year overshadowed (the) financial performance. And that has added further to public concern and distrust of the banking industry," HSBC chairman Douglas Flint said in the earnings release.
HSBC took a provision of $700 million to cover fines for failing to apply anti-money laundering rules, apologised again for the scandal and warned that the overall cost of the affair could be "significantly higher."
The bank said it also set aside $1.35 billion, mainly to compensate clients who were mis-sold payment protection insurance in Britain.
The London-based lender said it continued to cooperate with authorities after US lawmakers last month accused it of failing to apply anti-laundering rules, benefiting Iran, terrorists and drug dealers.
"It is not possible at this time for HSBC to know the terms on which a resolution of the ongoing investigations could be achieved or the form or timing of any such resolution," the bank said.
"Based on the facts currently known, HSBC has recognised a provision of $700 million, which reflects HSBC's best estimate of the aggregate amount of fines and penalties that are likely to be imposed in connection with these matters.
"There is a high degree of uncertainty in making this estimate and it is possible that the amounts when finally determined could be higher, possibly significantly higher," the bank added.
HSBC was thrown into crisis last month when a US Senate report found that it had allowed affiliates in countries such as Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh to move billions of dollars in suspect funds into the United States without adequate controls.
Lawmakers said money laundered through HSBC-linked accounts benefited Mexican drug lords and terrorist networks, and skirted US sanctions on Iran.
HSBC apologised again on Monday for the crisis which has already sparked the resignation of its head of compliance David Bagley.
"We apologise for our past mistakes in relation to anti-money laundering controls and it is a priority for senior management to build on steps already taken to manage risk and ensure compliance more effectively," chief executive Stuart Gulliver said.
He added: "It is right that we be held accountable and I apologise for our past shortcomings.
"HSBC is now run and managed as a genuinely global firm, making it easier to set, monitor and enforce standards."
HSBC -- which unlike some of its British rivals survived the 2008 crisis without state bailouts -- was founded in Hong Kong and Shanghai in 1865 and is presently headquartered in London.

"You didn't build that" is more than one line by President Barack Obama wrenched from context by Mitt Romney and the Republicans to paint their opponent as anti-business: It's now an event.
The Romney campaign is holding 24 events, in fact -- in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Virginia, Ohio, Iowa, Florida, Missouri, North Carolina, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico and Nevada -- to "allow small business owners the chance to respond to President Obama's claim that 'if you've got a business--you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen.'"
Obama was referring to the "American system" and "roads and bridges" when he made the comment on July 13.
The Obama campaign and the Democrats have begun their rebuttal. The Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee are hosting their own on-the-ground events, along with a press call with small-business owners on Wednesday. Obama himself appears in an ad airing in battleground states calling the ads that feature the line "flat-out wrong."

Single pill could be used to treat Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and multiple
Scientists have developed a new class of drug which can be taken orally and prevents the damaging effects of inflammation in the brain.
Early results from animal studies suggest it could be effective against a plethora of devastating brain conditions.
They include Alzheimer?s and Parkinson?s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), motor neurone disease, frontotemporal dementia, and complications from traumatic brain injury.
Two of the drugs, known as MW151 and MW189, have been patented by US scientists at Northwestern University in Chicago.
They work by blocking excess production of damaging immune system signalling molecules called pro-inflammatory cytokines.
New research published in the Journal of Neuroscience showed how early treatment with MW151 prevented the development of full-blown Alzheimer?s in laboratory mice.
Scientists say the drugs offer a completely different approach to treating the disease to others currently being tested.
These target the accumulation of beta amyloid protein deposits in the brain which are a key feature of Alzheimer?s.
In contrast the new drugs are designed to stop inflammation disrupting wiring in the brain and killing neurons.
Pro-inflammatory cytokines cause the synapses, the connections between brain cells, to misfire. Eventually the whole organisation of the brain falls into disarray, like a failing computer, and neurons die.
?In Alzheimer?s disease, many people now view the progression from mild cognitive impairment to full-blown Alzheimer?s as an indication of malfunctioning synapses, the pathways that allow neurons to talk to each other,? said Professor Martin Watterson, one of the study leaders at Northwestern University?s Feinberg School.
?High levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines can contribute to synaptic malfunction.?
Mice genetically engineered to develop Alzheimer?s were given MW151 three times a week starting at six months of age. A comparable stage in humans would be when a patient begins to experience mild mental
decline.
At 11 months, by which time the mice should have developed full-blown Alzheimer?s, cytokine levels in the brains of the animals were found to be back to normal. Their synapses were also working normally.
Untreated mice had abnormally high brain levels of cytokines and their synapses were misfiring.
Co-author Dr Linda Van Eldik, director of the Sanders-Brown Centre on Aging at the University of Kentucky, said: ?The drug protected
against the damage associated with learning and memory impairment. Giving this drug before Alzheimer?s memory changes are at a late stage may be a promising future approach to therapy.?
Harmful inflammation also plays a role in a wide range of other neurodegenerative disorders, raising the prospect of using the drug to treat many different conditions.
Earlier tests on mice showed that MW151 reduced the severity of a
disease similar to MS in humans that strips nerve fibres of their insulating myelin covering.
In other mouse experiments, the drug prevented a surge of pro-inflammatory cytokines after traumatic brain injury.
?If you took a drug like this early on after traumatic brain injury or even a stroke, you could possibly prevent the long-term complications of that injury including the risk of seizures, cognitive impairment, and, perhaps, mental health issues,? said Professor Mark Wainright, also from Northwestern?s Feinberg School.
Parkinson?s, non-Alzheimer?s dementia and motor neurone disease were other conditions that could potentially be tackled using the new approach.
A key advantage of the drug is that it can be swallowed as a pill, rather than being injected. It easily crosses the ?blood brain barrier?, a physical and molecular fortress wall that stops toxic molecules entering the brain.
Results are yet to be released from the first Phase I trial assessing the drug?s safety in human patients.
This is the first step in winning clinical approval for a new treatment.
Dr Simon Ridley, head of research at the charity Alzheimer?s Research UK, said: ?This research takes an interesting approach to tackling Alzheimer?s. Most current therapies in development target amyloid, whereas this drug appears to act by reducing the damage caused by activation of the immune system.
?We know that the immune system and inflammation are important players in Alzheimer?s disease and so it?s promising to see that this approach could hold benefits.
?These are early findings in mice and the drugs would need to be tested in humans before we could judge their true potential as a new treatment. With over half a million people in the UK living with Alzheimer?s, effective new therapies are vital.
?Research is key to reaching this goal and we must keep investing
in fresh ideas and new strategies if we are to tackle this devastating disease head-on.?

Syrian rebels have accused the Assad regime of moving its chemical weapons to the borders, even as the Syrian government has been "backpedalling furiously" from its warning yesterday that it would use its chemical arsenal against foreign intervention in the civil war gripping the nation.
Agence France-Presse reports that the Free Syrian Army warned in a statement today that President Bashar al-Assad's government has been moving its chemical weapons to new locations along the Syrian border.?
"We in the joint command of the Free Syrian Army inside the country know very well the locations and positions of these weapons," the statement said. "We also reveal that Assad has transferred some of these weapons and equipment for mixing chemical components to airports on the border."
"According to our information, the regime began moving its stocks of weapons of mass destruction several months ago ... with the goal of putting pressure on the region and the international community."
The FSA's statement comes as the Syrian government appears to be stepping back from yesterday's warning that the regime has a chemical arsenal that it will use against foreign intervention.
Yesterday foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi publicly acknowledged Syria's chemical arsenal for the first time, saying that ?Those weapons will only be used in the case of exterior aggression.? Mr. Makdissi also said that the weapons ?will not be used against Syrian civilians,? and that ?they will never be used domestically no matter how the crisis evolves.?
But The Guardian writes that Syria's foreign ministry and information ministry have been "backpedaling furiously" from yesterday's statement, and speculates that Makdissi may have spoken out of turn. The Guardian notes that Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said that "When the foreign ministry spokesman says that Syria will not use chemical weapons against its people, then this doesn't mean that Syria has such weapons in the first place." And the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) claimed today that Makdissi's comments were taken out of context "as a declaration of possessing non-traditional weapons."
The Ministry said that the goal of the statement and the press conference wasn't to declare but rather to respond to a methodical media campaign targeting Syria to prepare world public opinion for the possibility of military intervention under the false premise of weapons of mass destruction (similar to what happened with Iraq) or the possibility of using such weapons against terrorist groups or civilians, or transporting them to a third party.

This suggests that in addition to being driven by a relentless profit-seeking motive, there is also an element of rent-seeking in widening income disparity in the United States that often goes unacknowledged by observers on both the Right and Left. ? ?

Spicy Sweet Potato Juliennes : City Connect

A lot of health magazines are classing ?sweet potatoes as one of the ?most nutritious vegetables. ?I will leave that debate to the experts. ?I grew up eating sweet potatoes in curries, chips and crisps and enjoy them as they taste slightly better than the potato. ? There are two varieties of sweet potatoes sold in most supermarkets ? one with a slightly redder skin and white flesh and one with a lighter colour and yellow flesh. This?recipe works with both varieties but the cooking time taken for the yellow flesh one is less.?For this recipe, I used the white fleshed sweet potatoes.
Ingredients for 2 servings
2 medium to large sweet potatoes
1 tablespoon olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 or 2 green chillies for garnishing
Method
1. Wash and scrape the sweet potatoes
2. Cut them across into thick slices first and then cut ?these slices into juliennes.
3. Heat the olive oil.
4. Add the sweet potatoes and season them with salt and pepper.
5. ?Transfer to a microwave dish and cook for 5 minutes.
6. ?Add lemon juice to the sweet potatoes and microwave for 2 more minutes.
7. Garnish them with?green?chillies and serve them as a side dish to any meal.
8. ?For Hindus around the World the month of Shravan started last Saturday. ?This is an auspicious month for Hindus and a lot of them will be fasting during this month. Some fast for the whole month eating only fruits, nuts, root vegetables like potatoes and sweet potatoes, milk and milk products and avoiding grains. ?Sometimes a little innovation like this recipe can make the fasting foods more interesting.

Shares Investment: Brent crude oil has rolled down from a high price of above US$125 in Mar-12 to below US$100. What is your view on the black gold?
Marcus De Maria: I remember when it was up above US$140?s in 2007/2008 and my team were day trading with massive volatility until it went all the way down to the US$30s again. That was a wild ride. So can this happen again? I don?t believe so this time. My view is that for the first time in a long while, I started buying into it a few days ago ? I might be a little early, but I don?t want to miss the move up when it happens.
SI: Both gold and silver had their prices peaked in Aug- 11. What is your take on the two precious metals? Which, in your opinion, offers more opportunities?
Marcus: I tend to concentrate more on silver than gold because silver is more volatile, which allows many more entry points and exit points. So I tend to enter around US$36 and exit with a quick 10% but have the majority of my silver allocation in more medium term plays. The chart does look bearish at the moment though, so I have not added to my position.
SI: Platinum has historically traded above gold. However, this long-known trend has reversed in recent times. Is this pattern sustainable?
Marcus: Yes for the first time in 20 years platinum is priced below gold. But does this mean that gold is overvalued or platinum is undervalued? As we know, gold is a play on currencies being devalued. China is slowing down due to a lessening of global demand for its products. So in the short term platinum might stay low, but for the medium to long term I like its chances. I have recently bought some for my children?s pension.
SI: What do you expect stock market conditions to be like in the second half of 2012? In particular, what is your outlook for Asian markets? What should traders look out for?
Marcus: I love that question ? However, I don?t have a crystal ball. All I can do as a trader is to trade what I see. I believe that you should have a strategy and stick with it, not try to second guess the market. I believe that you should look for what I have named, ?Precious Resources? ? an asset which a growing number of people need but which is getting used up. Gold isn?t getting used up, 99% of the gold that has been mined is still in circulation. But silver, platinum and palladium are all used up in a variety of applications, so you have to like their chances in the long term. And of course oil.
I am really excited about the Asian markets. That is why we are setting up a training and trading centre in Singapore and Malaysia with our friends, Success Resources.
SI: What advice do you have for someone who is new to trading? For a novice, which are the markets he/she should start with?
Marcus: If you are new, I would actually recommend that you invest medium term. Timing the market for a newbie is a big thing to ask. But they can make good money if they spent more time catching up with the market. I have two daughters, and I am slowly building up a position for them in Precious Resources over time.
The strategy is simple ? allocate a certain amount of money every month to two-three Precious Resources. In a month when the price goes up compared to last month, invest a little less, if it goes down compared to last month, invest a little bit more. This is my twist on an improved Dollar Cost Averaging, which I have named, Value Cost Averaging. You don?t have to think too hard and you will outperform the market over time that way.
SI: What are the common pitfalls that most traders experience in their journey? For those who intend to become professional traders, what advice do you have?
Marcus: I believe that not everyone can make it as a successful trader. If I were to start again I wouldn?t trade by myself, I would have a trading buddy to force me to follow the rules every time. This is the only way to see if the system is working or not. More often than not the system is working but the trader isn?t working because they don?t follow the rules. They get excited by the market action and try something out ? it rarely works.
Rather than day-trading, I would start with a system that does not rely on the market being open, so there is no excuse for the emotions to get hold of you, like an end of day strategy.
Also ? and this is not the case for investing ? but if you are trading ALWAYS use a stop loss. If you are not using one as a novice trader, you should stop right now and do something else.
SI: Your journey to financial independence is awe-inspiring. Before setting up Investment Mastery (your very own wealth creation and education company), you had actually attended many seminars. In what ways are Investment Mastery different to the other seminars?
Marcus: Thank you but all I did was applying principles I learned from people like Anthony Robbins around my mindset, rather than the skill-set. Interestingly these were seminars, which is fine for mindset but I am not convinced you can learn enough to be able to trade during a seminar. There are too many people and precious little chance of getting your questions answered, no practice and crucially, no follow up support.
At Investment Mastery we have turned it on its head and run workshops not seminars. Everyone has a laptop, we practice placing trades, we spend a lot of time getting people prepared to make money and then we follow up with you immediately the next day. We have one hour coaching calls every week with our traders live where you can get all your questions answered.
It?s a lot of work for us but our graduates appreciate it because let?s face it, the follow up support is probably as important as the workshop itself!

Majority of Britons Lose Out on Dream Jobs Due to Economic Crisis
The economic conditions borne of the current recession are forcing British job seekers to grab whatever roles they can, instead of chasing their dream job.
According to new research conducted by uSwitch.com, an independent price comparison service, 77 percent of Britons have given up hope of pursuing their ideal position.
Although more than half of those surveyed [51 percent] agreed that satisfaction was the most important thing to look for in a job, cash constraints and family obligations are forcing them to be more pragmatic.
Only six percent of respondents told the survey that they were in their dream career. Over one in four [28 percent] said they have had to let their dream career pass, citing a range of reasons from having a baby to lack of job security, and the need for a higher salary.
According to the uSwitch study, just five percent are ready to sacrifice financial security for a dream job at present.
However, it appears that many Britons would consider having another tilt at their dream job in the future, with 35 percent of respondents saying they would be ready to sacrifice benefits such as health and life insurance should the perfect opportunity arise. Another 21 percent said they would be willing to give up high salary for a dream job.
The UK's unemployment levels are forecast to remain high for the next five years, according to a recent study by the Centre for Economic and Business Research (CEBR).
"The outlook is tough for UK households, particularly those in places with a high dependency on public sector employment. Family budgets are being squeezed between the pressures of rising unemployment, low earnings growth and stubbornly high inflation," said the CEBR in a statement in May.
Another set of data from the Office of the National Statistics puts the unemployment rate for May at 8.2 percent.
