Job Description
The Boston College Libraries seek a creative, innovative, and experienced leader for the position of Associate University Librarian for Instruction, Access & User Engagement, to provide vision, leadership, and direction for all library services to Boston College students, faculty, and staff, in accordance with our Strategic Plan and our motto of "Value Beyond Discovery". The position provides vision and leadership as the Libraries migrate to a predominantly integrated digital environment, with redefined and transformed physical and virtual spaces, collections, and services, supported by a flexible, agile, and responsive organizational structure. The AUL for Instruction, Access & User Engagement is part of the Libraries' senior management team, which currently includes the University Librarian, the AUL for Collection Services, the AUL for Special Collections and the AUL for Organizational Development and Assessment.
Key opportunities for the new AUL for Instruction, Access, and User Engagement include:
Providing leadership in envisioning and creating an integrated library instruction program;
In collaboration with key campus partners, developing a future-oriented learning commons in O'Neill and beyond;
Participating in the planning and implementation of spaces conducive to scholarly research, productivity, and support (e.g., Scholar's Center); and
Facilitating broad conversation and services assessment and development in all areas related to the discovery, access, and use of our scholarly resources.
The University has committed to enhancing library services and spaces, already underway on a small scale, but to be accelerated in the coming years. The AUL for Instruction, Access & User Engagement will lead the re-envisioning and enhancing project(s) related to space and services. Requirements
Proven organizational, communication, and leadership skills coupled with an ability to manage in an ever-changing environment.
The Libraries' Strategic Plan emphasizes entrepreneurship, collaboration, and the continuing development of a learning organization.
Current initiatives accentuate emerging forms of scholarly communication and social media, but still value the ambiance of the traditional library. M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited program
7+ years of substantial management and supervisory experience in increasingly responsible positions in an academic or research library
Demonstrated leadership ability
Strong problem-solving skills
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with key constituencies, including faculty, staff, and students
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain deep collaborative relationships to deliver effective services to users
Ability to conceptualize, articulate, and deliver long- and short-range goals and participate in strategic planning in a very dynamic environment
Ability to innovate and maximize the benefits of new technology for teaching and scholarship
Deep understanding of digital library issues and opportunities, particularly as they impact faculty and student productivity
Deep understanding of teaching and learning practices and innovations in higher education
Knowledge of strategic and project planning best practices
